Sound of Music Salzburg - Museum
Film History at Hellbrunn
The new Sound of Music Museum Salzburg has been open since September 20, 2026. Right next to Hellbrunn Palace, a unique exhibition awaits you, centered on the world-famous film The Sound of Music, the Trapp family, and the story behind this Hollywood classic.
An Experience for Movie Fans
Salzburg and The Sound of Music are inextricably linked. Millions of people around the world are familiar with the film’s breathtaking landscapes, its music, and the story of the Trapp family. The new Sound of Music Museum Salzburg now brings this story to life in an even more immersive way. Right on the historic grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, the historic buildings - the coach house, the hunter’s lodge, and the gamekeeper’s house - have been extensively renovated and adapted for the new exhibition. This is where film history, the true story of the Trapp family, and modern exhibition technology come together.

Sound of Music Museum in Hellbrunn: history meets modernity
The Sound of Music Museum in Hellbrunn is located at a special historic site. Right at the entrance to the Fürstenallee at Hellbrunn Palace, a Baroque complex of buildings has been transformed into a modern exhibition space. The exhibition takes you on a journey through the history of The Sound of Music. It’s not just about the famous Hollywood film, but also about the people and events behind the story. Visitors learn more about the true story of the Trapp family and discover how an extraordinary family history became a musical and, ultimately, one of the most famous films in cinematic history.
From the Trapp Family to a Hollywood Classic
The story of The Sound of Music began long before the world-famous film starring Julie Andrews. The museum traces its evolution from Maria von Trapp’s memoirs through the Broadway musical to the international cinematic success.

What can I see at the Sound of Music Museum?
The Remise: The World of The Sound of Music
The Remise focuses on the film’s worldwide success. Visitors learn more about the making of the Hollywood film, its international impact, and the connection between the film and Salzburg. The actors and their roles are also part of this story. Julie Andrews, of course, is particularly closely associated with The Sound of Music, having made film history as Maria von Trapp.
The Jägerhaus: The True Story of the von Trapp Family
The Jägerhaus focuses on the historical von Trapp family. Here, you’ll learn more about the family’s life, their musical career, and the historical events that later formed the basis for the musical and the film. In this way, the museum brings together two perspectives: the world-famous Hollywood myth and the family’s actual life story.
