The Sound of Music (1965)

When the Sound of Music was released in 1965 it took the world by storm, earning five Oscars.

For millions of people, the film is the rare combination of a powerful and moving story, first rate music, and breathtaking scenery of Salzburg!

The musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun.

She falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide to flee from Austria with the children.

60 Years The Sound of Music

1965 - 2025: 60 years of the movie “The Sound of Music”. Since its premiere in 1965, the movie has thrilled millions of people worldwide and is one of the five most-watched movies of all time. The success of “The Sound of Music” is based not only on the rousing music by Rogers and Hammerstein, but also on the touching story with a happy ending, which returns to viewers' living rooms every year at Christmas time.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of fans come to Salzburg to visit the movie's famous locations and immerse themselves in the world of the Trapp family. A number of different events are planned in Salzburg to mark the movie's anniversary. In addition to numerous anniversary celebrations, a new museum dedicated to the legacy of “The Sound of Music” is planned to open in Hellbrunn in 2026, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the story of the making of this masterpiece and its lasting influence.
